New Appeasement Best Practices

Retailers have shifted their approach to handling customer complaints, particularly fraud claims, by increasingly relying on brands to take responsibility. Historically, brands were cautious about offering appeasements to avoid encouraging fraudulent activity, but retailers are now pushing brands to offer appeasement credits to loyal customers reporting fraud, instead of referring them back to the retailer.

Despite improved card security, fraudsters continue to find ways to exploit PIN codes. Retailers are training staff to detect tampering, but no solution is foolproof. TDS stays on top of all trends and best practices on behalf of our clients. Want to learn how we can help your gift card program stay up-to-date? Reach out to us at [email protected].

New Legislation in Maryland

Maryland has passed Senate Bill 760, aimed at combating the growing issue of gift card tampering. The law requires brands to add a specific tamper warning to their cards and for closed loop cards to cover all numbers related to redemption. All physical cards sold in the state of Maryland must comply with the requirements by the effective date of 10/1/2025.
